Vol Recruiting: Weekend Visitor Preview

KNOXVILLE— While Butch Jones and his staff hosted 10 visitors last weekend, this upcoming group is even larger. As of early Friday morning, Tennessee is expected to host 14 prospects this weekend in what are undoubtably the most important few days of recruiting of Jones’ Vol career. We’ll continue to update this post as things change over the coming days and will recap the weekend in a separate article early next week.

The Vols are hosting eight commits and six targets in the next few days. Jones will be looking to shore up a few commitments and convince several targets that they would look great in orange and white when signing day arrives. The most anticipated visit comes from 5-star defensive end Carl Lawson. Rated as the No. 2 player in the nation by Rivals, Lawson is committed to Auburn but is warming on the Vols. One of his teammates, Peyton Barber, will be joining him. Barber is rated as a 3-star running back and though he is currently committed to Ole Miss, he isn’t ruling out Tennessee. Lawson’s good friend, 4-star Vol receiver commit Ryan Jenkins, will also be visiting this weekend.

Shelton Gibson, a 4-star receiver from Ohio, will be making the trip to Knoxville Friday. He is committed to West Virginia, but has expressed recent interest in the Vols. He’ll be joined by another receiver, Josh Smith. The 3-star wideout from CAK is firmly in the Tennessee camp. Smith’s teammate and fellow Vol commit Brett Kendrick, a 3-star offensive tackle, will also be on campus.

The only uncommitted prospect scheduled to visit this weekend is Jaylen Miller. The 4-star defensive end is considering offers from Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Wake Forest, but Tennessee is likely at the top of his list. An impactful visit could result in a commitment from the talented defensive end.

Vol commit Malik Foreman will be making his first trip to campus since switching his commitment from Vanderbilt to Tennessee. The speedy 3-star athlete runs a 4.4 40 yard dash and is projected to play cornerback. Another Vol commit, Austin Sanders, will be making an official visit and is rated as a 4-star offensive tackle. Both Foreman and Sanders are thought to be firmly committed to Tennessee.

One of the most intriguing visitors this weekend comes in the form of Davin Bellamy. He’s been committed to Florida State since August but the Tennessee staff has been pursuing him intently. Bellamy, a 4-star defensive end, is thought to be reconsidering his commitment to Florida State and is one prospect to keep a close eye on moving forward.

Tennessee is scheduled to receive a visit from 4-star athlete Jason Smith. Smith as been committed to Auburn since July. Vol linebacker coach Tommy Thigpen recruited Smith during his tenure at Auburn, and it is that relationship that presumably convinced Smith to travel to Tennessee this weekend to see what the Vols are all about.

Two 3-star prospects from Ohio, tight end A.J. Branisel and offensive tackle Dylan Wiesman, will also be on campus; both are strongly committed to the Vols. They’ll be joined by a 3-star cornerback, Cameron Sutton, who committed to Tennessee in August.

Look for detailed information on each visitor, including our take on their chances to sign with the Vols, early next week.
