Top 5 Butch Jones quotes of fall camp.

Butch Jones

KNOXVILLE—Fall camp is in full swing and Tennessee head coach Butch Jones has uttered some absolutely brilliant lines during open portions of practice. I’ll introduce each quote and offer a brief reaction. Here are the five Butch Jones quotes that stand above the rest.

5. We all know it’s hard to break an old habit. And we all know losing under Derek Dooley became a habit harder to kick than heroin. Jones addressed this earlier in the week during a punt drill when the team couldn’t get properly aligned.

“Have some poise and discipline! Know how to practice! Too many losing habits!”

Though Dooley is in Dallas, his losing ways clearly linger.

4. Jones is apparently well-versed in the world of bread. Yes, bread. In fact, he referenced a specific brand of bread when calling out a player for not giving 100% during a drill.

“Your new nickname is ‘Wonder’ because you loaf every play!”

As a football player you never want to be compared to bread, much less a bankrupt bread.

3. During an end-of-game FG drill a George Bullock kick was blocked by freshman Jalen-Reeves Maybin. The defense ran off the field celebrating while the ball was still live. Butch nearly had an aneurysm.

“We don’t celebrate until the game is actually over! Make sense?”

I’m guessing Jones recently watched film of Tennessee’s win loss at LSU and win loss to North Carolina in the Music City Bowl.

2. This one took place during punt return drills during which it became abundantly clear Jones is no fan of the fair catch.

“Don’t call for a fair catch! I wanna see a guy who’s got the nuts to return the ball!”

That’s right, fair catches are for pansies.

1. Jones, who is a spiritual man, added some talk of the ethereal to the football field with this quote.

That’s football! That’s football! Taking someone’s soul!

If that’s not on a T-shirt soon I will lose faith in capitalism.
