Vol Practice Report: A change at QB?
KNOXVILLE—The Vols hit the practice field this afternoon and generally looked a bit sloppy after last night’s rainy open practice. Here are a few quick notes.
Quarterbacks: Did Nathan Peterman’s performance last night do enough to supplant Worley as the favorite for the job and earn the redshirt freshman more first team reps? One note that may or may not mean much: Peterman took snaps with first team center James Stone during individual drills while Worley worked with second team center Mack Crowder. For the majority of fall camp, Worley worked almost exclusively with Stone while Peterman worked with Crowder. Again, it may not mean much but it’s significant enough to note. Jones may clear things up a little during his post-practice press conference. Jones didn’t address the QB race after practice in any meaningful way.
The Vols hit the field again tomorrow and hopefully we’ll be able to get a better handle on where the QB race stands.
Peterman and Worley continue to throw significantly more during drills than their freshmen counterparts. Working with receivers, Worley and Peterman each went 6/8 while Ferguson and Dobbs were 4/4. Their combined total of 20/24 is significantly better than the 6/20 mark they tallied in the same drill earlier this week.
Special Teams: The Vols continued to devote significant time to punting. Michael Palardy is a much-improved punter from last season and unless he’s inured, it doesn’t look like Matt Darr will see the field. Darr continues to struggle with getting the ball away quickly and hasn’t shown a the ability to make consistent contact with the football.
Injuries: Marlin Lane worked in “The Hole” designated for injured Vols. He was joined by Ryan Jenkins, Paul Harris, Jacques Smith, Tiny Richardson, Johnathan Johnson, Dylan Wiesman, and Alex Ellis. Pig Howard, Curt Maggitt, Justin King, and Brian Randolph all wore green non-contact jerseys.
After practice, Jones said Wiesman is a tough kid and practiced some and that Lane was held out as a way to manage his health. He has been banged up a bit this fall and Jones is taking every precaution to keep him healthy.
Butch Quotes: “You’re moving slow! Very slow! You must’ve had a heckuva night. “The Strip” was hopping. They’re going to name “The Strip” after you!”
“Can I get some Marvin Gaye up in here?!?!”
After his request “Let’s get it on” started blaring through the speakers.
