SEC Power Rankings week 4: Murphy’s Law
There were no real surprising results in the world of college football this past weekend. The SEC gets its second premier match-up of the year with the Bayou Bengals taking a trip up to Athens.
1. Alabama
Last Week: 31-6 Win over Colorado State
This week: 9/28 vs. Ole Miss
The Tide looked sluggish and were soundly beaten in the 3rd quarter by an out-manned Colorado State. Luckily for Tide fans, the Rams only mustered six points in a game that Bama could not put away until the 4th quarter. The lackluster performance of the Tide rushing attack in 2 of their 3 games this season has to be somewhat concerning. Ole Miss rolls into Tuscaloosa in a match-up of a team at the pinnacle of college football and a team on the rise. Ole Miss has some play-makers in the passing game, it will be interesting to see if a Tide secondary that was scorched by A&M and Manziel can hold up against the Rebel Black Bears.
2. LSU
Last Week: 35-21 win over Auburn
This Week: 9/28 at UGA
Les Miles’ crew easily disposed of Auburn, jumping out to an early 21-0 lead and cruising to victory. Next up is a titanic matchup with UGA that will have SEC and National Title implications. Zach Mettenberger makes his return to Athens after being booted from the Bulldogs in the midst of the ‘Dogs quarterback competition with Aaron Murray three years ago.
3. Georgia
Last Week: Won 45-21 over North Texas
This Week: 9/28 vs. LSU
The Bulldogs looked sloppy in victory over North Texas. However, I would not read too much into it as they were probably looking ahead some to this weekend’s date with LSU. For both teams, this game carries large implications towards their SEC and National Championship aspirations (obviously). A top-10 SEC game on CBS at 3:30 on Saturday, it does not get much better than that football fans.
4. Texas A&M
Last Week: Won 42-13 over SMU
This Week: 9/28 at Arkansas
JFF did his thing as the Aggies cruised to an easy win over the Mustangs. They will enjoy being on the right end of similar week against an Arkansas team that will be tremendously outgunned by the Aggie offense. While A&M should win this game comfortably, Arkansas’ run game could give the Aggies some trouble throughout the game.
5. South Carolina
Last Week: Bye
This Week: 9/28 vs. UCF
The Gamecocks welcome to town a UCF team that is 3-0. They should be able to beat the Knights comfortably, but it is a game that could be interesting.
6. Florida
Last Week: Won 31-17 over Tennessee
This week: 9/28 at Kentucky
The game started out bleak for Gator fans as quarterback Jeff Driskel struggled early and then had to leave the game with a season-ending ankle injury. Luckily, Tennessee struggled to hang onto the ball as much as the Gators did in the first half. Even more luckily, backup Tyler Murphy came in and provided a spark for a stagnant Gator offense. That was enough to ward off the Vols as they could not execute any offense until the second half. The Gators will enjoy their second SEC victory of the year in a trip to Lexington to face off against Mark Stoops’ Wildcats.
7. Ole Miss
Last Week: Bye
This Week: 9/28 at Alabama
The Rebel Black Bears enjoyed a bye week before hitting the road to face a major test against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Ole Miss has been on an upward trajectory this season and it is worth watching this game to see if they can continue their ascent under 2nd-year coach Hugh Freeze.
8. Auburn
Last Week: Lost 35-21 to LSU
This Week: Bye
The Tigers were out-manned by LSU and the result showed that. The Tigers have done well in their 3-1 start under Gus Malzahn. They get a bye this week before taking on Western Carolina.
9. Vanderbilt
Last Week: Won 24-7 over UMASS
This Week: 9/28
Vandy looked bad against UMASS. Fortunately, for the ‘Dores, that was UMASS. Now they continue their quest to conquer the SEC’s easiest non-conference schedule with a home date against UAB.
10. Miss State
Last Week: Won 62-7 over Troy
This Week: Bye
The Bulldogs took care of Troy like a power program is used to. Now they get a bye week before a home date with LSU. Dak Prescott has seemingly commandeered the Bulldogs quarterback position from Tyler Russell and has displayed a game similar to former Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf.
11. Tennessee
Last Week: Lost 31-17 to Florida
This Week: 9/28 vs. USA
The Vols failed to capitalize on the cavalcade of Gators first-half turnovers. Tennessee fans quickly learned the value of having a quarterback who can simply just manage the game. Nathan Peterman’s first start was a series unfortunate events, and while Justin Worley’s second half play was far from perfect, he did less to hurt the Vols than Peterman did.
This series has featured tough luck for the Vols since 2004, but usually it’s in the form of bad special teams play on the Vols’ part. While the Vols continued their trend of failing to capitalize on Florida’s mistakes, they did avoid any horrendous special teams breakdowns, so that’s a positive to take away.
The one tough break for the Vols that was out of their hands was the appearance and excellent play of Gator backup quarterback Tyler Murphy. The Vols did a fantastic job of pressuring and keeping Gator quarterback Jeff Driskel in the pocket, unfortunately Murphy brought a higher level of athleticism than Driskel that the Vols could not contain for the entire game.
The Vols need to regroup and get a win versus South Alabama and in the process decide if Worley is who they want to stick with the rest of the year or if one of the true freshmen is ready to take the reigns.
12. Missouri
Last Week: Won 45-28 over IU
This Week: vs. Arkansas State
Mizzou tallied a solid victory over the Hoosiers. Now Gary Pinkel and his Tigers get one more non-conference match-up against an Arkansas State team that already lost to Auburn previously before taking their second shot at being an SEC team.
13. Arkansas
Last Week: Lost 28-24 to Rutgers
This Week: 9/28 vs A&M
Bret Bielema gets his welcome to SEC play by getting to play Johnny Manziel and friends. The final score of this game could end up looking a lot like Tennessee-Oregon.
14. Kentucky
Last Week: Bye
This Week: 9/28 vs. Florida
Tyler Murphy takes his show on the road to face the Wildcats. Meanwhile, the Wildcats will be more challenged to score against Florida than Tennessee was this past week.
