SEC Power Rankings Week 7: Who Wants to win the SEC East?
Well this season had been relatively devoid of upsets and of games that shook the college football world, then this past weekend happened. This season really seems to be pointing to an inevitable Oregon-Alabama BCS Title game matchup, although the Clemson-FSU winner should have a say should they finish the season unbeaten.
Anyway, here’s some SEC Power Rankings. All thoughts and opinions are solely my own and are in no way correct, that said 60% of the time I’m right every time.
1. Alabama
Last Week: Won 48-7 over Kentucky
This Week: 10/19 vs. Arkansas
The Tide rolled again last week over Kentucky. The same will happen this week as they welcome Bret Bielema’s Hogs to Tuscaloosa, where the Razorbacks may be better served to go camp out at Dreamland BBQ for the weekend. Nick Saban will name his score over the poor piggies. It’s the Tide’s last warmup before their highly anticipated (sarcasm) matchup with Tennessee for the fourth (?) Saturday in October.
2. LSU
Last Week: 17-6 Win over Florida
This Week: 10/19 at Ole Miss
Granted Florida’s offense isn’t keeping any defensive coordinators awake at night, but John Chavis’ crew put in a solid effort against the Gators. If the defense keeps improving to go along with the Bayou Bengal’s tremendously balanced offense, Les Miles’ team will have a major say in the National Championship race.
3. Texas A&M
Last Week: 41-38 over Ole Miss
This Week: 10/19 vs. Auburn
Johnny Manziel stole a W from the Rebels for the second consecutive year. While the Aggie defense is still far from good, they made plays when they had to. Now they welcome a young Auburn team to College Station. I look for Manziel to continue his elite-level of play and beat the Tigers no matter how bad the Aggie defense plays against Gus Malzahn’s squad.
4. Georgia
Last Week: lost 41-26 to Mizzou
This Week: 10/19 at Vandy
The rash of Bulldog injuries caught up to them last Saturday. Aaron Murray may get one of his compatriots back this week in running back Todd Gurley for the trip to Nashville. The Bulldog defense still has not shown much progression now that we have crossed the halfway point of the season. Luckily for Mark Richt’s guys, the Commodores pose little to no threat to the Dawgs.
5. South Carolina
Last Week: Won 52-7 over Arkansas
This Week: 10/19 at Tennessee
The OBC and his Gamecocks completely rained on the Arkansas homecoming parade. Connor Shaw and Mike Davis dismantled the Arkansas defense, scoring 52 unanswered points. Now the Gamecocks venture to Knoxville to take on a Vols team coming off a bye. It will be interesting to see whether the Gamecocks can repeat their stellar play of last week for a second consecutive road game.
5. Florida
Last Week: Lost 17-6 at LSU
This Week: 10/19 at Mizzou
The Tyler Murphy joy ride for the Gators ended last week in Baton Rouge. Now they venture to Columbia, Missouri to take on a Tiger team missing their starting quarterback in James Franklin. This game has major implications on the SEC East race because with a win either team will control their own destiny in getting to the SEC title game. I’m thinking the Gator defense decides this game.
7. Auburn
Last Week: Won 62-3 over Western Carolina
This Week: 10/19 at A&M
The War Eagle Tigers get the pleasure of facing another top 10 opponent on the road (the other was LSU). While I’d be shocked if Gus Malzahn’s team doesn’t put up a solid amount of points against an Aggie defense that is especially porous against the run, the Tigers might literally have to score on every possession to keep up with Johnny Football.
8. Missouri
Last Week: Won 41-26 over Georgia
This Week: 10/19 vs. Florida
The Tigers got a statement win in Athens, but suffered a major scar for their efforts as quarterback James Franklin has been sidelined for the majority of the rest of the season with a shoulder injury. That’s why I haven’t moved them up in the power rankings more, because I fully expect them to drop their next two games versus Florida and South Carolina.
9. Ole Miss
Last Week: Lost 41-38 vs. A&M
This Week: 10/19 vs. LSU
Johnny Football stunned the Rebel Black Bears for the second consecutive year. The plethora of young talent on Hugh Freeze’s squad is apparent, but to beat the SEC powers it takes more than talent. Things don’t get easier this week as LSU comes to town.
10. Tennessee
Last Week: Bye
This Week: 10/19 vs. South Carolina
The Vols should be well-rested for their matchup versus long-time nemesis Steve Spurrier. The Gamecocks are coming off their best game of the season in their dismantling of Arkansas. The Vols will need to play an entire game with the execution and confidence of their second-half against UGA two weeks ago. Getting Marlin Lane back helps, but once again the Vols chances in this game rely on Justin Worley’s ability to exploit South Carolina’s linebackers and defensive backs. He will surely be under duress throughout the game due to USCe’s front four.
11. Vanderbilt
Last Week: Bye
This Week: 10/19 vs. UGA
The Dores’ welcome to Nashville a UGA team that completely destroyed them a year ago. The good news? UGA is not as good as last year, especially given their injuries on the offensive side of the ball. The bad news? Vandy’s defense is incredibad. Expect Aaron Murray to put up some monster numbers this week.
12. Mississippi State
Last Week: Won 21-20 over Bowling Green
This Week: Bye
The Bulldogs get a bye from their downer of a season. Maybe Dan Mullen can figure out who he wants to be his quarterback with the extra time off. Not that it really matters.
13. Arkansas
Last Week: Lost 52-7 to South Carolina
This Week: 10/19 at Bama
It blows my mind that some media services still project this steaming pile of pigs to a bowl game *cough* ESPN *cough*. Alex Collins is a stud, the rest of the team is nowhere close. BTW if Bielema wants the future to be brighter, he may want to start trying this thing called recruiting. If Mark Stoops can do it at a basketball school, why can’t he? Also, what happened to #karma?
14. Kentucky
Last Week: Lost 48-7 to Alabama
This Week: Bye
I am predicting Kentucky won’t lose this week. I know that sounds bold, but it’s just a gut feeling.
