Vol Spring Practice: Notes from Tennessee’s second practice

Tennessee took the field Saturday morning for spring practice No. 2. Four sessions, primarily consisting of individual drills, were open for media viewing. Here are a few notes from the practice field.

Notes

*Tennessee is hosting a massive junior day this weekend and numerous prospects (and their families) were in attendance at practice.

*Devrin Young, who Jones said would move back to running back before spring practice kicked off, worked with both the running backs and receivers. He’s listed as a WR on the depth chart but could play a hybrid position in Jones’ offense. He’s one of Tennessee’s better playmakers and the staff clearly wants to utilize him in some form. He looked comfortable working with both groups and could be headed toward a big spring.

*Josh Malone and LaVon Pearson are clearly SEC-level athletes who move with ease. They also have very good hands. I’ve yet to see either of them drop a pass.

*There have been far fewer balls on the ground this spring than at any point last season. Having four healthy quarterbacks and a receiving corps at full strength has certainly been a contributing factor in UT’s increase in passing efficiency. The chemistry between QBs and receivers has improved significantly. Tennessee’s quarterbacks are far more accurate than they were last season and the Vol receivers have demonstrated better hands and sharper routes.

*The Vols opened practice with several receiver on defensive back drills from the 8-yard line. Malik Foreman and Josh Malone matched up first and Foreman won that battle. Look for Foreman to push heavily for playing time this year. Justin Coleman and Marquez North went next, with Coleman winning that matchup. LaVon Pearson and Cameron Sutton were the last pair to battle. Pearson made a nice play in the back corner of the end zone to haul in the TD.

*True freshman lineman Coleman Thomas has impressed thus far. Physically, he looks more like a veteran than a freshman. He’s been lining up as the starting right tackle so far this spring.
