An up and down season for the Vols will end in the NCAA Tournament. Tennessee earned an 11-seed and will be playing 11-seed Iowa in Dayton in a “play in” game on Wednesday at 9:10 pm (TV: TruTV). Tickets are available at UTTix.com. Should the Vols advance, they’ll head to a Friday matchup with 6-seed UMASS in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Though the Vols fell to No. 1 Florida over the weekend, they’re headed into the tournament as one of the hotter teams in the nation. Prior to losing a tough battle with the Gators, the Vols hadn’t trailed in five consecutive wins. Their Dayton opponent, Iowa, lost six of their last seven games.

Massachusetts got off to a blazing start this season, winning 15 of their first 16 games. They finished 9-7 down the stretch and aren’t playing their best ball. Should the Vols defeat both Iowa and UMASS, they’d probably face 3-seed Duke for the rights to go to the Sweet 16. The full NCAA Tournament bracket is available here.

This is Tennessee’s 20th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance and the first under Cuonzo Martin. The Vols have earned a tournament berth seven of the last 10 years. Wednesday marks Tennessee’s first appearance in the “First Four” in Dayton. More analysis to come Monday in our weekly “State of the Vols” column.
