Vol Spring Practice: Notes and video from “competition Thursday”

Tennessee took the field Thursday for their second practice of the week. Five sessions of individual and team drills were open for media viewing. Here are a few notes from the field plus video of the Vols in action.

Notes

*As has been the case all spring, the Vols are still searching for answers at the tackle position. Today, walk-on Jacob Gilliam worked with the first team in Dontavius Blair’s place. The Vols need Blair to step up and take the left tackle job by the horns if they’re going to get back to a bowl this year, but up to this point he has struggled adjusting to SEC level competition. As always, take depth chart changes with a grain of salt. The staff is most likely trying to motivate Blair.

*Butch Jones started practice off with live 11-on-11 drills in which the offense faced 4th-and-1. Each QB got a chance to lead the team. Worley converted his try by keeping it on the zone read. Peterman handed it off to Hurd—who promptly ran over a couple Vol defenders for the conversion. Dobbs had the play of the day when he escaped from a free rushing Curt Maggitt on a roll out and hit Josh Malone on the sideline for a long gain. Ferguson’s unit failed to convert after Alden Hill was stuffed at the line.

*True freshman Daniel Helm worked with the first team at tight end. Helm and Ethan Wolf have both been working with the first team this spring.

*In addition to his 4th-and-1 conversion, Josh Dobbs impressed in individual drills. He was consistently throwing the ball with accuracy and velocity. All four quarterbacks are getting equal reps but that will be changing moving forward. Look for a couple quarterbacks to start to separate from the pack the next couple weeks.

*Jones dubbed it “competition Thursday” when the Vols took the field with Rocky Top blaring over the loudspeakers.
