Tennessee head coach Counzo Martin has removed himself from the running for the Marquette job according to numerous reports. Wes Rucker of 247Sports was the first to break the news. Martin met with Marquette officials Sunday and was thought by many to be their number one choice. He met with UT athletic director Dave Hart and Tennessee officials multiple times Monday.

Martin will be entering the fourth year of his five year contract this fall and is scheduled to make $1.35 million. In his three years at Tennessee, he has compiled the third-winningest record in the SEC but is currently the league’s 11th-highest paid coach. A raise and extension, if he is to remain at UT, should be announced soon.

Wake Forest and Boston College are two other major college openings, but neither program is currently believed to be targeting Martin. Should another school pry Martin from UT, they would owe Tennessee Martin’s $1.3 million buyout—which dropped from $2.6 million Tuesday.

The Vols went 24-13 last season and made their seventh Sweet 16 appearance in program history.
